About the Show

Child Hoods: A Tale of Detroit, Hollywood and Standup Comedy is the story of comedian Joey Camen’s wild life – that of a young Jewish boy growing up in Black neighborhoods in Detroit in the 1960s, making his way into the world of Hollywood standup comedy at 17 in the 1970s where he quickly found himself working with comedians Richard Pryor, Robin Williams and others. This engagingly written and performed show also delves into Joey’s tragic home life with an abusive father, how a mentor helped him keep his sanity and finding his true calling. This solo play is based on his 2017 autobiography, Laughing Through the Pain: Stories from the Trenches of Hollywood Standup Comedy and Beyond.
